About Lisa Ooi: Your counsellor
I have been working with children and young people in a variety of different educational settings since 2005. After a successful career as a secondary school teacher, I chose to return to studies and train as a counsellor. I had seen first hand the way that mental health impacts young people and felt that I could help more young people realise and achieve their potential through working interpersonally with them.
After I gained my Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences (Counselling) Degree, I further honed my skills with a Diploma in Working with Children and Young People. Through this time, I continued to work in education and kept abreast of relevant pedagogy. I am a Member of the New Zealand Christian Counselling Association (NZCCA), and abide by their code of ethics. |
I previously worked on the Youth Team at HELP: Auckland. This agency works with those who have experienced sexual abuse. I have also worked with Rape Prevention Education in schools around the Auckland region teaching young people about healthy relationships free from abuse. I have developed skills in working on Mental Health forums with a focus on sexual abuse and self harm. I worked with the Tavistock and Portman Trusts on the "Big White Wall" – an online early intervention service for people in psychological distress. I have been a site moderator and community developer for Pandora's Aquarium, After Silence, and more recently, Dear Em.
While I have specialised in working with children and young people, I am adept at working with a wide range of age groups in a variety of different ways. I can also offer ACC funded counselling for those who have experienced sexual violence; and limited funding may be available for clients under 18-years of age. Part of my job means I can go in to schools in the Auckland region to deliver much-needed counselling to young people who might otherwise not be able to access our service.
