Working with non-standard presentations in the counselling space
Karen has worked multiple clientele with different and challenging presentations including childhood emotional neglect, living as a Highly Sensitive Person, people experiencing faith crisis and decluttering or hoarding. Karen also offers business coaching. Today, she shares her knowledge on how to work with clientele that have
unusual presentations.
When faced with a client that has an unusual presentation, an initial response is to ‘freak out’ and instantly look for someone to refer the client on to. In fact there are often not the referral sources available and most therapists do have the skills to deal with the presentation of the client and to effectively manage them through to a degree of freedom. There will still be clients that need to be referred and Karen will provide some referral sources and also show you, as the therapist, how to identify and treat unusual presentations.
In this seminar, Karen demonstrates the process of dealing with a non-standard client presentation including coping skills for the therapist, clinical interviews, developing treatment plans and treatment methodology, increasing tolerance and distress management, celebrating client successes and knowing when to refer. She also shares the application of this methodology to the practical example of decluttering. She will answer questions about this methodology.
